East West Karate Academy is located in beautiful Sussex County NJ, being centrally located close to the border of Lafayette and Sparta on Rt 15. We study the Isshinryu form of Karate, which is an Okinawan style emphasizing speed, simplicity, and practical self defense. In Addition to Karate we have added Judo to our School for those interested in learning throws and grappling. Sensei Ramon Hernadez of North Jersey Judo is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Judo and owns his own School in Pompton Plains NJ. Continue reading »
Welcome to East West!
Dear East West Students & Parents,
This past weekend we received news that Sensei will be inducted into the Isshinruy Hall of Fame in July.
In order to receive this award the following criteria has to be met:
This individual has become well known as an ambassador of Isshin-Ryu beyond his or her
own dojo and Isshin-Ryu organization. They are well respected by non-martial artists as
well as those within the martial arts community. They are non-political in promoting the
unity of Isshin-Ryu Karate, holding the cause of Isshin-Ryu Karate above personal gain.
They do not attempt to elevate themselves in the eyes of their students or peers by
disparaging others.
This person is one who has stepped forward and assumed the responsibilities of being in a
leadership role when called upon. This individual demonstrates a high degree of personal
integrity, dignity, and honor. Their demeanor and character will be a legacy to all members
of the Isshin-Ryu family.
On behalf of the Yudansha Congratulations Sensei on this achievement it is truly an award well deserved. We are honored to be a part of your organization!
If you have enjoyed the experience of camp, you know its time to sign up and secure a couple of days for yourself. If you or your child has not traveled this special journey, speak to the many current students…kids and adults that have. Ask any Black Belt. Always special and never a regret. Where else can you train and learn all day and laugh all night away from the rest of the world? Looking forward to my 13th year in a row. Sign up today.

I wanted to address a few things regarding Testing Policies and Guidelines. I always encourage communication when it comes to questions regarding your road to BLACK BELT. Yes, there are times when possibly there was an oversite or a computer generated report does not pull up the correct info and we can review it to see what happened.
Promotions are based on the following Criteria:
1. Attendance
2. Effort
3. Ability in Kata
4.Ability in Sparring
5. Ability in Self Defense
6. Weapons requirements (if applicable)
7. Knowlege of terminology and History of Karate and Kobudo
8.Extra Events and Participation in Mandatory Events.
9. TIME IN RANK- The belt needs to look warn before changing it to another one.
10. And here is the biggest one of all………. MY GUT.
I have always taken pride in Our Dojo’s ability to have over the National average of retention (over 70%). We do this not by having people sign contracts but by teaching good Karate and setting a course for a student to mature into the ranks of Brown and Black Belt at a pace that I feel is good for each individual.
I can tell you that over the years there have been Parents and Students alike that have not agreed with the length that I set but, those that have trusted me soon found that my decision was the correct decision.
Karate is a road that is best traveled with a determination but with Patience.
Our Dojo also will NEVER be considered a BELT MILL, all ranks awarded by myself will be accepted anywhere in Isshinryu in the world.
Here are some attendance and Age guidelines
Adults normally 6-12 months for each promotion.
Teens - @ 12 Months for Brown Belt and above
Barracudda Belt (Half blue and Green) is for ages 10 and below.
Kids and Dragons – 2 stripes for each belt @ 2-4 months below the rank of green belt. After green Belt each stripe is 4-6 months on average.
Jr Black Belt Promotions are on average every 6 months between colors.
Black Belt minimum age requirements is 15 years of age (Can they back it up physically and are they responsible and mature enough)
Most Promotions for higher ranks Green and above will take place at our Shiai’s at Karate Camp, April and December.
WHAT IS THE RED STRIPE FOR?
This is a stripe given by myself only, it is a sign that this student works tremendously hard and remembers all that I tell them to do and comes back to the Dojo each week with the corrections complete. They are the ones that will get my attention first. They do what is asked of them.
WHAT IS THE BLUE STRIPE FOR?
Dragons and Kids.
Parents if your child is being disrespectful, defiant, and does not take care of responsibilties let me know. The next time they come to the Dojo they will get a blue stripe and it will remain until I get your nod that its ok to remove.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT ALL TOENAILS AND FINGERNAILS ARE SHORT. I was cut last week by a 6 year old that had toe nails longer than an Ostrich.
Shiai is Sunday so please be on time and remember that all spectators are FREE so please ask your family to come and watch and support our Karate Students.
All Children in the waiting area are expected to sit quietly so that everyone can enjoy the Dojo. No running around, no toys on the ground and certainly no shouting. We have a HUGE FRONT AND BACK LAWN, take advantage of it and bring a blanket or a frisbee if you so desire.
I am also considering estimates to stream audio into the waiting area.
Lastly,
Karate Camp applications are on our website and are in the front reception area. This is one of the BEST activities we do each year. Talk and ask those that have been to Camp and the Parents that have sent their kids to Camp. We have guest Instructors and its a most memorable and rewarding experience that you or child will have all Summer.
See eveyone Sunday!
Sensei
Private lessons are a great way to get that extra edge to polish and complement the karate training you have dedicated your time for your child or yourself. A 30 or 60 minute session with one of our highly trained Black Belt Instructors can be that extra edge that it takes to make your regular class training that much more rewarding. They are ideal for review and improvement before a Shiai, testing, Karate Camp, or preparing for an outside tournament. Or perhaps you just treat yourself once per month to rise above the crowd! All of of our Instructors are students first and have a minimum of 10 years training with Sensei. We will help you get where you want to go with individual attention and a game plan to forge ahead. Be selfish. It’s your training. Sign up for a private lesson today. You won’t regret it. Ask any of the many who are utilizing this special training now.

A VERY SPECIAL SEMINAR- This will be more motivational then any other, just his presence and humbleness. I encourage all that are 8 and older to experience a true taste of Okinawa history and Karate!
On March 16 & 17th we will be hosting a seminar with Sensei Teruo Chinen. Sensei Chinen began his training in Goju Ryu karate in 1951 directly under the tutelage of Chojun Miyagi Sensei. In 1953, upon the death of Chojun Miyagi, Sensei Chinen continued his training under Ei’ichi Miyazato. In 1969 Sensei Chinen moved to the United States and began teaching Okinawan Goju Ryu in Spokane, Washington. At that time Sensei Chinen was Chairman of the Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate-Do Federation. Sensei Chinen then formed Jundokan International in honour of his teacher, Sensei Miyazato. Jundokan is the name of Sensei Miyazato’s dojo. Jundokan dojos now operate throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Sensei Chinen now spends much of his time travelling around North America and Europe lecturing and teaching traditional Okinawan style karate. He has become one of the most sought after speakers, lecturing to groups from all styles of karate. He teaches traditional style karate, in the traditional way, as he learned from his first sensei, founder of Goju Ryu Karate-Do, Miyagi Chojun Sensei.
Please follow the link below to download the necessary paperwork to sign up. We look forward to seeing everyone. This will be an awesome event!

| WHAT IS JUDOJudo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking. Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs. Only) and arm locks (+17 yrs. Only). From a standing position, it involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs. On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin your opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various chokeholds or joint locks until submission. Judo is a sport, with local, national, and international competition. It was the first martial art included in the Olympic Games. Judo teaches discipline, self-respect, and confidence. Judo is a physical activity that involves psychomotor development of the total person. Judo is a method of self-defense that teaches you how to protect yourself.
Judo is among the safest of all contact sports. As a martial art and Olympic sport, Judo is governed by the International Judo Federation (IJF), which has set strict safety guidelines for competition. To ensure safety at North Jersey Judo, all classes are held on IJF approved mats and instructed by a USA Judo certified coach. Most importantly however, our instructor is knowledgeable and always puts safety first.
